Mite/U8 Parents,
Welcome, we have a lot of fun things planned for the 2011/2012 Mite/U8 hockey season. My name is Lory Keeney and I will be the Initiation Level Coordinator. I have 4 children with my oldest playing on the HS hockey team while my youngest will be signing up for a mite 2 team this year. I've been involved in the MYHA program for many years and I use to be the Mite Coordinator back when my oldest was that age. A lot has changed over the years but the core has stayed the same.
The Initiation Level is what hockey players are called before they move on to Travel in 4th Grade. Our Initiation Level is broken down into MITES and U8. New this year: ALL PLAYERS in PreK-1st grade will play as MITES. Mite Intro and Mite 1 will be co-ed. In 2nd and 3rd grade the girls will play U8 and the boys will play Mite 2 or Mite 3. The U8 girls will have their practices at the same ice time as the Mites but they will comprise their own team. U8 players will also play their games against other U8 girls. .
My main goal for the upcoming season is to have improved communication and organization. Like any other program out there we rely on volunteers to make our program successful. In order to make this upcoming season better in all areas I’m asking for help from each of you. As you all know, many hands make light work. There are jobs that can be done at home, jobs that are one- time events, jobs that are ongoing, etc; I ask that you think about how you can help out, it is a great experience for all of the players! If everyone takes on a small part then it’s not so overwhelming for a few of us. I understand that everyone is over committed, try having four kids to run around I'm living it.
This year we will be communicating all of our Mite/U8 information on our MYHA Web page under the Mite/U8 section and on their team pages. It’s very important that you get in the habit of checking it often at: www.mahtomedihockey.pucksystems.com
What I'm looking for are people that can take initiative, are organized and follow through with what they have offered to do. Please read the below information and email me back on what area's you would like to help with.
1) MYHA Mite/U8 Registration You can register online at: www.mahtomedihockey.pucksystems.com
Pre kindergarten & Kindergarten: Mite Intro
1st grade: Mite 1
2nd grade: Mite 2 & U8
3rd grade: Mite 3 & U8
2) MYHA Mite/U8 Coaching Opportunities If you are interested in being a head coach or an assistant coach this year for our Mite/U8 level please send me over an email with your contact information ASAP: name, cell phone, mite/U8 level you want to coach at, look at above info on how we have the age levels set up. You also need to register with USA hockey and with Mahtomedi Hockey. Both registrations are done online and are required whether you plan to head or assistant coach. Please consider coaching if you have any hockey or coaching experience, this group requires a lot of on-ice help. All we ask is that coaches are there to help ALL children at their level. After I receive everyone's coaching information I will send out more detailed information on what you will need for forms, coaching class's dates & times and online classes.
3) Member of the MITE/U8 Event Committee
Events that need to be planned throughout the year include: indoor jamborees, outdoor jamborees, Mite/U8 Fun Night, Holiday Skate night, Hockey Day Across Minnesota Day, End of the Year Skate Party. We need a Chair for each event and a committee of volunteers to help. There will be a MITE/U8 Event Meeting where different groups will form for each event. You can help in one, a few or all.
Feel free to email me with any questions or concerns that you may have. I'm looking forward to spending a fun filled year with all of you, with hopefully a lot of you helping me.

When does the season start?
The hockey season typically starts in late October for older Mites and U8's (Grades 2 and 3), and early November for younger children
When are practices held?
Typically on Saturday and/or Sunday mornings
Where are practices held?
Usually at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center (click here for map), or the White Bear County Arena (click here for map).
Do they ever skate outside?
Yes! Mahtomedi is fortunate to have 3 outdoor rinks located at the District Education Center. Outdoor practices and events are held here when the outdoor season opens and the weather permits.
What equipment will my skater need?
A helmet, chest protector, elbow pads, shin pads, breezers, skates and a stick.
That sounds like a lot....
Mahtomedi is holding its first ever "garage" sale this fall, where plenty of used equipment will be available. Play It Again Sports and other stores also have gently used equipment at substantial discounts.
Are there girls that play hockey?
Yes, quite a few! Brand new skaters and all pre-K and Kindergarteners should register for Intro Mites. Mite 1 will be all 1st Graders. Both of these levels are co-ed, however girls will be grouped with each other on the ice, if they would like. 2nd and 3rd Grade Girils will be U8's.
Can my skater be on the same team as our neighbor?
We can't guarantee that, however ALL same age/level skaters always practice at the same place at the same time.
I still have more questions!
Contact Lory Keeney, information listed below, or attend our Mite Info Night In October sometime. More detalis to follow on date and time..
